John Thornburg, the bandit, threatened Balch With a dynamite bomb he carried. Bank - The First National Bank of Chanute, shortly after Thornburg calmly robbed it yesterday, forcing the city attorney to help him in the job. Two sticks of dynamite, a battery and percussion caps were fixed to the bandits body and with the threat to complete the deadly circuit of two small wires he held in his hand, Thornburg forced bank officials to turn over what money was quickly available. Ill blow all this bank to hell, threatened Thornburg as he held the wires close together. So bank officers, bandit and city attorney conferred in the directors room as negotiations were made for the vice-president to take cash in the tills (it amounted to $4,860) and turn it over to Thornburg. Kidnaped Ward Lee Scott, 25-year-old taxi driver, whose cab was commandeered by Thornburg as he emerged from the bank. With the city attorney as the second hostage in the car, Scott was forced to drive the bandit four miles into the country.
