Today started off great with our regular breakfast brigade gang bringing another fantastic and filling meal. We passed out gift cards to the Veterans along with hugs and encouraging words. The cold weather is here now so the next order of business was bus passes and cold weather gear. Well, the transit office was closed because its a government holiday and despite my pulling on the door and yelling Noooooooo it remained closed. And then we ran out of gloves. Then hats. Then hot hands. 25 cold faces looking at us and we ran out. This is what happens when we first adjust to the winter temperatures and we KNOW the first few weeks are rough - new faces passing through to warmer temps , people with no coats, panicked folks ... And even though we know, it still hits us hard in our hearts. So after a tough day a few of us had a cry or two. We talked about where folks would go for this stuff if we didnt have it?? Gloves, tents, sleeping bags, emergency jeans , flashlights ... Its a lot of pressure sometimes. Enough to really bring you to a sad sad place. Then, one of our friends who has been close to us for over a year sent me this. Its for all of you too. :You folks are making everybody in that place feel like a million bucks. They may all still smoke like trains but I dont pick up near as many cheap liquor containers around here with their names on them as I used to. A lot of guys that got sauced a couple times a week are consistently looking good here lately. You folks are changing lives. Were not there yet, but we are on our way. :) And thats what lights the fire inside us
