Today, the NLEOMC released its officer fatality report for 2014. The report shows that, based on preliminary information received, 126 officers died in the line of duty in 2014, which is a 24% increase over last year’s numbers. Particularly troubling was the fact that 50 officers were shot and killed—a 56% increase over last year—with 15 of them killed in ambush attacks (the fifth straight year that ambush attacks were the number one cause of felonious fatalities for officers). Traffic-related deaths (49) also increased by 11% in 2014.
