Today the Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia of Metropolitan, formerly - TopicsExpress

Today the Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia of Metropolitan, formerly known as the William Grant Still Memorial Youth Orchestra celebrates its 24th Anniversary. There is no formal concert as we prepare for the big 25-year celebration next year. Our annual summer camp begins July 7th and runs through July 18th, which will end in concert at First Congregational Church in downtown Atlanta. Over one thousand students have passed through our welcoming, nurturing doors. We have traveled coast-to-coast (and still do) and have been to West Africa twice (and will go again). So many of our alums are doing well in their careers whether its is music or medicine, law, education, computer science, business, ministry, and so on. We shall continue on. To our Alums, thank you for the opportunity of teaching you. We want to see you next year (2015) for our 25-year Celebration in two phases: June 25, 2015 for our Summer Camp Concert and sometime in October for our big Gala and Concert with Alums of the Dekalb Youth Pops Orchestra (DYPO) for its 30th Anniversary of its founding. Those who wish to pick up your instruments and play, please let me know. These youth orchestras in metropolitan Atlanta (plus the Atlanta Youth Pops Orchestra (with the support of the Clark College Orchestra) were instrumental in starting a trend of performing a variety of multicultural music: classical, jazz, Negro spirituals, gospel, reggae, ragtime, country, motion picture themes, Top-40: rock, R & B, hip-hop, and so on. We have met many public officials, world leaders, professional athletes, and celebrities.
