Today the universal church celebrates st. Luke the evangelist, often referred to as the author of the gospel of Gods mercy. One could practically soak in Gods mercy just by contemplating the parables in Lukes gospel. The parables of the Good samaritan (Luke 10), of jesus, the woman and the pharisee (Luke 7), of the prodigal son (Luke 15), of the rich and lazarus (Luke 16), of the pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18), of Jesus and zacchaeus (Luke 19), and many demonstrate beyond and doubt the compassion character of st. Lukes gospel. Who on earth would deny that our world today stands in need of Gods mercy and compassions!. The world has a lot of grounds for gratitude and hope but also suffers from multitudes of threats and dangers to life, to the environment, to values and to faith. Most of these are beyond what man alone can handle and control. It is for this that we shall always need God who is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. Our lord Jesus christ set up the universal church to care and cater the poor, the weak and the sinners. Our lord said he had come not for the healthy and righteous but for prisoners, sinners, the downtrodden and the sick (Luke4). This same message shows in the teaching of the universal church and the popes over the years. Blessed pope John paul II writing about Gods mercy in Dives in misericodia declared that Jesus is the incarnation of Gods love and mercy and that although God is equally just, his mercy is greater and more profound than his justice. Infact, he wrote that Gods mercy conditions his justice. Pope emeritus, Benedict who wrote caritas in veritate emphasized that charity is the principal driving force behind the universal churchs social Doctrines. Pope Francis has shown by words and action his papacys option for the weak and the poor. The month of october is so special for all catholic and is a month special devotion to our mother mary, the mother of mercy.....
