Today was a reminder why I am still working for Quoddy Link after 13 years...what a wonderful day on the water!! Start with this morning...we had our Annual North Atlantic right whale trip scheduled and unfortunately we were not able to find any right whales (there were a few reported on Thursday) and the weather wasnt great to search too far but our Scout Boat did locate THREE humpbacks for us (as well as a large number of finners spread out). The humpbacks were resting and diving and we stayed with them for quite a while and got some incredible looks at all three...and it got SO much better when we realized who we had....we spent our morning with Whistler, Vee and FOGGY!! Foggy is a humpback who is near and dear to the hearts of many of the whale watchers in Fundy and she was severly entangled and successfully disentangled last September. If you dont remember her story check it out! digbycourier.ca/News/2013-09-30/article-3412423/Rescuers-save-humpback-from-a-tangle-of-ropes/1 This afternoon was a regular whale watch and it was so wonderful! The winds calmed right down and we got word of a few minkes in the Islands with too much boat traffic (which is not good for the whales and we try and avoid whenever possible) so John took us offshore to search towards the Wolves. We found a few minkes and FOUR finback whales (and zero boat traffic)! We started with a pair of large finners and then a smaller whale approached the boat quite closely, we are fairly certain it is a calf just starting to explore some time away from mom. During our last look at the pair of large finbacks a third whale joined them...it was an incredible last look at the largest whales that frequent the Bay of Fundy. THANK YOU to everyone who joined us today aboard the catamaran...it was a special day! Pictures will be posted soon from both trips today.
