Today was my 2nd meeting with the Bexar County Re-entry Council. The room was full of about 60+ ppl that are representatives of community organizations working to help keep people from returning back to jail including the Bexar Co. Sheriff, judges, SAPD officers, parole and probation officers, etc. At the end of the meeting I stood up and asked how many people were familiar with the Cite and Release law and only a few raised their hand, before I could finish explaining the law, Sheriff Susan Pamerleau interrupted me and started defending NOT using the law. I stood my ground as I could see just bringing up this information got under her skin, and I could see at least half the room nodding their head in agreement with me when I talked about the costs of each arrest that this law allows us to avoid. After the meeting several people approached me in front of her agreeing with me and supporting me and giving me their business cards. It was an exciting moment to feel more supported by people in the community than our own Sheriff. I played my cool while she started growing horns lol
