Today was my fathers birthday. Leon Shaffer Golnick, the advertising executive who created the phrase More Parks Sausages, Mom ... Please, was a legend in the 20th Century. He was born on October 17th. He had the sharpest mind of anyone Ive ever known, said Herb Pass, a long-time family friend and vice president of the Fort Lauderdale-based Golnick Advertising. Mr. Golnick, called Mr. G by friends and employees, is perhaps best known for his work for Parks Sausage. He created the slogan while watching Henry G. Parks grind sausage in a Baltimore garage. Perhaps his biggest acclaim was doing the Advertising, and marketing for Ford Car Dealerships across America and Canada. Leon Golnick worked closely with Henry Ford, and Lee Iacocca, in close support of thousands of dealerships over many decades. Mr. Golnick was born in Baltimore after his immigrant parents moved from Odessa, Russia. His first job, at age 13, was as a singer on a vaudeville stage in Baltimore. But his singing career came to an end as his voice changed, his son Marshall Golnick said. Mr. Golnick worked for The Sun newspaper in Baltimore, first as a delivery boy and later as a senior reporter. At the newspaper, his eye turned toward marketing after he realized advertising writers made $60 a week, and reporters only made $25 a week, his son said. Mr. Golnick was known for creating the concept of syndicated advertising, a marketing strategy that allows many businesses to share production costs. He remained active in advertising right up to his death, his son H. Marshall Golnick said. Were going to miss his outlook. He had a real vision for the future,. Leon Shaffer Golnick was also a pioneer of early Television, with NBC, and Bob Sarnoff Jr. One of his biggest hits was TV Dtective, and Reward Theater, where a panel of movie and TV Stars competed with a panel of FBI Agents, as to who committed the scripted murder! The show was on the air for over a decade.
