Today we are witness to the extreme usage of abusive language on the social media, generally not by the illiterate lot from the lower classes but by formally educated youth from the middle class. The primary reason, it appears is that our upbringing and our education systems have miserably failed to develop critical thinking among the youth. We have only been able to condition them for rote learning and have faith in a belief system which cannot be questioned. Now any individual when confronted with logical reasoning with this mindset does not have the reasoning ability and verbal skills to respond, hence what they are left with is abuse and dirty language. Hence we do not interact with “thinking” humans but a kind of protoplasmic robots who are programmed to react in a particular way. If we want our youth to develop a scientific orientation towards any discourse we will have to change the programming by changing our own attitudes by encouraging questioning by our young ones and bring about radical changes in our educational system. And only then we will be interacting with “thinking” humans. Waseem Altaf
