Today we had our hospice visits, including four new assigned patients. We entered the room looking for Veronica and I thought it was the bed closest to the window. It wasnt. When we passed the first bed, Veronica sat up so fast I thought she had been shocked. And she had been in a way, by the sight of Blueberry. She was very hard of hearing and did not hear much of what I said but it did not matter because she smiled the entire visit. Watching Blueberry move around and sniff and stopping for a pat or two. She is beauuutiful she said several times. I had to say Blueberrys name louder and louder so she could understand me, but when it clicked, she snickered and whispered, Bluuuuuerrry. Our next few visits were great and Blueberry was meeting and greeting the staff in the hallway as we walked through the various wings. So many dog treats are now in office drawers that Blueberrys dinner portion on the days we visit this facility is greatly diminished. :) When we went to meet our last new patient, he was in his bed. Mr. R was turned towards the window, looking out or so it seemed. When I introduced Blueberry though, he did not respond. I truly did not know if he could not hear me or if he was just in his own place. So I came around the other side of the bed and tried again. He responded a little bit to my presence, but not to what I was saying. He was back in the 1950s talking about Eisenhower and the war and then rambling words that made no sense to me. I just sat there for a few minutes and agreed with his commentary -- then Blueberry shook her body and her tags clinked together. He responded: I like dogs. I miss my dog when I was a boy. He was such a good dog and I never got to say bye. Then he again began rambling off on various topics. I dont think he knew I was there. I dont think he knew Blueberry was there. He himself was not even there in many ways. But the sound of the tags reminded him of his dog as a boy. When his time comes, I hope his dog comes running to meet him, with his tags clinking. Dogs rule. Peace all.
