Today we hiked up a rather steep and twisty path to the Santuario of Madonna di Reggio, high above our village. The first photo is looking back at the village, at the beginning of the hike. The second is the Santuario. It was worth the hike; the Santuario was incredibly peaceful and the surroundings just beautiful--clearly a very holy place. We picked blackberries on the way up, and at the top some members of the community gave us tomatoes from their garden. On the way down, we harvested some fresh rosemary that I used for dinner. A little less than halfway up is the town cemetery, which by law had to be outside the village. So, the people of Vernazza, who climb up and down endless steps and hills their whole lives, end up with the best view for eternity. At the end of the day, we ended up in our favorite waterfront bar saying goodnight to the sun. Ciao, sole!
