Today we want to share a little more about our raison d’être as a magazine and what makes us unique. SHIFT was born out of a need to see Christians relate better with the world around them and, in turn, to give the world a clearer picture of what were really about as Christians. When Christians look out into the world, with its many industries and systems, we automatically see the devil and darkness, and highlight what isn’t working or doesn’t line up with our beliefs. Since the Bible says there is no where we can go to escape God’s presence, even darkness (Psalm 139:7-12), we developed the basic belief that God is everywhere, not just in church settings. We felt that we should teach ourselves and others to look out into the world and see God and the light, instead of seeing the devil and darkness. We felt we should celebrate what is working and what is good- whether that’s in entertainment, media, or culture. We don’t see the world as the devil’s playground or as an adversary. We see it as God’s creation and in the midst of the darkness, God is doing some amazing things through some amazing people, whether in the secular or sacred, and those are the stories we will tell. SHIFT is not just a faith magazine, nor is it just a culture magazine. We are “at the intersection of faith and culture” which means there’s a place where the two meet and it’s from that place that we will report. This means you’ll find things in SHIFT that you won’t find in your typical Christian or culture magazines and that’s what makes us unique. Thanks again for joining us on this journey.
