Today while vigiling with my friend and my oldest daughter, a very confused Zionist came up to us livid with fury by our signs calling us all ignorant. Raynettes said No More Violence, Joys said No war anywhere ever again and mine said No War, End Genocide, Let Mothers Speak and Gaza Lives. One other said End All Genocide. She asked if any of us had ever been to Israel and said Hamas cuts peoples heads off and slits women open. She was rabid with rage. Raynette remained calm asking what was wrong with her sign. Joy raised her voice and i could not get in a word edgewise. Finally there was a lull and i told the woman about Women In Black being started by an Israeli woman in Tel Aviv opposed to the occupation who was joined by a Palestinian woman. Told her over 2030 Palestinians had been killed mostly civilians, 67 of which 3 were civilians Israelis in the recent conflict. Told her about Big Mountain Dine resistance to forced relocation; barren lands given as reservations till corporations found resources in the 20s on Black Mesa of coal, oil shale and uranium. She said there was plenty of oil in Canada and i told her it was the dirtiest oil on the planet. She said how do you know and i told her what Indigenous women had told me about their lands being poisoned and the people dying of cancer from the Tar Sands. Told her about Peabody draining the Black Mesa aquifer to slurry coal to the now closed Mohave Generating station and that is what is being done all over the earth by the US. Told her that Israel has the 4th largest army on earth and she just kept telling us we were ignorant and had never been to Israel. I was sad for her. She was really off. Hope she finds some peace. My daughter Raynette remained balanced with her sweet sense of humor fueling her smile. It was her first vigil and the very first time we have been attacked like that in our 4 years of vigiling. No one who has ever said they would join us vigiling has ever done so. Vashon is strange. While that woman was yelling at us, many people driving by honked in support. Odd day...
