Today would have been Cameron Gulbransen’s 13th birthday. It was October 19, 2002 when the Gulbransen family’s lives changed forever. Cameron, 2, was fast asleep in his bed when his father, a beloved pediatrician, peeked in on him after getting home from a dinner with friends. After checking in on his son, Dr. Gulbransen went outside to move the family SUV in the driveway. Unbeknownst to Dr. Gulbransen and his wife who was inside paying the babysitter, Cameron had woken up and snuck out the front door. He wanted to see his daddy. Completely unaware that Cameron was outside and unable to see his son in the large blindzone behind his vehicle; Dr. Gulbransen backed over his baby boy. Cameron died that night. The Gulbransen family made a monumental impact in the passing of Federal legislation to eliminate the large blindzone that exists behind all vehicles. After years of tireless work and sharing their painful story time and time again, the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act was signed by President Bush in 2008 requiring a rear visibility standard on all vehicles. The standard was finalized earlier this year requiring that all vehicles come equipped with a rearview camera by year 2018… a HUGE success that will no doubt spare countless families from experiencing the heart-breaking loss that the Gulbransens live with every day. Please keep Cameron’s family and loved ones close to your heart and in your prayers today as they remember their beautiful little guy. KidsAndCars.org is blessed to have such an extraordinary family on our team and truly cannot express our gratitude for all they have done.
