Todays Devotion Topic: Vengeance Is The Lords (Self Assessment 37) We bless God for this beautiful Saturday. Kindly study the passage below and share your thoughts with us. Text: 1 Sam 26: 7- 12, 7 So David and Abishai went to the army by night, and there was Saul, lying asleep inside the camp with his spear stuck in the ground near his head. Abner and the soldiers were lying around him. 8 Abishai said to David, “Today God has delivered your enemy into your hands. Now let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of the spear; I won’t strike him twice.”9 But David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him! Who can lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless? 10 As surely as the Lord lives,” he said, “the Lord himself will strike him, or his time will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish. 11 But the Lord forbid that I should lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed. Now get the spear and water jug that are near his head, and let’s go.”12 So David took the spear and water jug near Saul’s head, and they left. No one saw or knew about it, nor did anyone wake up. They were all sleeping, because the Lord had put them into a deep sleep. THIS IS HOW SAUL DIED: 2nd Text: 1 Sam 31:2-5 2 The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. 3 The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him critically.4 Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and run me through and abuse me.”But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. Questions: i. Read vrs 7-8 again. How vulnerable is man in sleep? How can we ensure safety each time we go to bed? (Ps 3: 5) ii. Why do you think David did not see Sauls Vulnerability in sleep as an opportunity from God for him to revenge just as Abishai thought it to be? (Vrs 8) iii. David had deep reverence and respect for King Saul even though the King had been nothing but mean towards him. What can you say are some of the factors that makes it difficult for our generation to bear with and submit to difficult leadership? iv. David had a great revelation about Gods appointed leaders. He called them the Lords anointed. Can a difficult and impossible leader like Saul remain the Lords Anointed? Explain v. David said God forbid that I lay my hands on the Lords Anointed. Why is it challenging to comfortably whisper these words to your soul when all others are verbally abusing your wicked and insensitive boss, leader, pastor or lecturer, and are actually praying some ill or misfortune befalls them? Why do you join them? v.. Read David predictions about the possible ways that Saul could die in vrs 10- 11, then read the account of Sauls death 1 Sam 31: 2-5. Obviously it was not just David that understood the importance of spiritual ordinances and appointments, Sauls armour bearer too. Explain what you think the implications and consequences would have been for David had He killed Saul? vi. Many leaders (especially some pastors) have used scriptures like touch not my anointed .... (Ps 105: 15) to immunize themselves against godly and legitimate correction. What are some of the ways we can correct our leaders when they go wrong without offending the Lord who appointed them over us? vii. What have you learnt from todays study? Kindly reply through this same social media (whatsapp & Facebook). We learn a great deal from you. Counting on your coperation. (yonghana.org. Like our Facebook page: Y OUTREACH NETWORK)
