CAPITAL CITY: KINGSTOWN St Vincent & The Grenadines is an island nation in the Lesser Antilles, near where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of the main island of St Vincent and the northern two-thirds of the Grenadines, which are a chain of smaller islands stretching south from St Vincent to Grenada. The soil of St Vincent & The Grenadines is very fertile, making it good for growing a variety of vegetables and fruits. The islands’ agriculture is dominated by banana production. The services sector, mostly based on the tourism industry, is another important economic driver. The people speak in English patois, which incorporates elements from formerly suppressed African languages. Cricket, athletics, tennis, rugby, netball and football are popular. St Vincent & The Grenadines has over 25 different varieties of breadfruit. The fruit forms part of the country’s national dish of roasted breadfruit and fried jack fish. St Vincent & The Grenadines joined the Commonwealth in 1979. It made its first appearance at the Cardiff 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, and then competed at every Games from 1966 to 1978. The country next took part in 1994 and has participated ever since. The Edinburgh 1970 Commonwealth Games saw St Vincent & The Grenadines win its first medal, a Bronze in Weightlifting. At Christchurch 1974, boxer Frankie Lucas won the team’s first Gold. At the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, Natasha Mayers ran 11.37 seconds to win Gold in the Womens 100m.
