Todays News: Ive just reviewed PBSs program about Dr. Livingston which always brings to mind an old song by one of my favorite British groups. The show is inaccurate for it states that the technology used was the latest when I knew of it decades ago from NASA, other sources and Ive used it myself so many times since then. Specifically, the program failed to cite ways of specifically honing in on the type of berries used for ink and dropping the newsprint background. They made much to do about no one ever reading the diary before which does always cause a thrill many describe as goosebumps, a thrill Ive been so honored to have felt so many times worldwide as Ive handled rarities no one else ever has. But the information from the program was old. Id uncovered it long ago through griots, slave journals, triangle trade routes/accounts, missionary/family sources, from ancient healers, music, by interviewing tribal members. This is an investigative reporters/detectives way of confirming truth by comparing multiple sources to attribute/document facts for comparison, glean the wheat from the chaff, save only whats accurate, credible. That he revealed large waterways was proof that many were wrong thinking Africa was only desert over the centuries. But that there were huge waterways was information that was also well known at the time. The use of antique maritime tools which have been accurate for centuries was wise since sailors who created the first maps used the same equipment including so many famous explorers, merchants, etc. I was quite familiar w/all those resources, too. His disclosures about slavery caused the unfortunate imperialistic division, colonization of Africa and its easy to see the same problems today not only there but in Crimea, for example, where treasure is being seized, causing battles. Or when the Pope divided the world in half between Spain and Portugal centuries ago. The ugly fact remains that many refuse to face: black tribes perpetrated the worst crimes against each other by enslaving one another and selling them to plantations; raping/murdering/committing genocide; the worse perpetrators were frequently those whod been slaves themselves; the triangle trade sales of guns, ivory, people caused the inhumane abuse/use of humans, animals and resulted in mass murders/extinction for many species. Those who were too weak to travel were left tied to trees to be devoured alive, cannibalized, raped, murdered much the way Mafia set examples for those who dont cooperate. This is still true today. But the prejudice, bias that still exists is fueled, flamed by many who hate and refuse to accept that white men werent the only ones who practiced slavery. Ancient history proves this truth as well. In a sense, Livingston was a great journalist, media spokesman although he came to despise himself for what hed condoned, done. Its my great hope that the Pope and Obama will see the need to change their ways as they lead the Church and this country.
