Todays Saturday Rarity! Northbridge Theatre. 71 Sailors Bay Road - TopicsExpress

Todays Saturday Rarity! Northbridge Theatre. 71 Sailors Bay Road corner of Eastern Valley Way. Photo taken in 1953 by Oscar Sharp the proprietor. Theatre was built in 1928 and opened 9th June. Architect J S Budrodeen. Cost £9000. Oscar Shaft took it over in 1936 and ran it till July 1956 when it was demolished for a service station. Ironically, the service station is also gone, and it is vacant land on the last Google maps. This may well be the only photo in existence of this cinema. I spent the whole day with Oscar in 1971 going through 1000s of uncatalogued colour slides, determined not to leave the house till I found it! Oscar Shaft was the seventeenth manager since it was opened! It was never a success he said, due to the fact it was the last theatre on the circuit to receive films, and also the St. Leonards to Northern Beaches railway which would have had a station at Alpha Road, never proceeded. Matinees and Childrens days were Oscars features, and children were given a cake on their birthday. Strange how some children seemed to have many birthdays, he said!
