Todays Song of the Day: And so we finally reach the end of our Beatles Christmas Record Marathon, 1969s The Beatles Seventh Christmas Record. Once again, this was a collection of separate Christmas messages recorded by the Beatles individually and edited together by Kenny Everett. By the time this was recorded in 1969, the Beatles already had broken up; they just hadnt broken the news to the public yet. As such, this makes this the actual finale to the Beatles career, not Abbey Road. Since 1969 was the year of John and Yoko (what with their bed-ins, live concerts, experimental albums, the Give Peace a Chance and Cold Turkey singles, and of course the Happy Xmas (War Is Over) campaign), more than half of the material on this record comes from the Lennons. Whether its talking about the wall outside their house, wishing for peace in the 70s, or improving Christmas tunes in their John and Yoko way; the other Beatles are mostly secondary presences to the final Beatles Christmas record. Paul performs another special song, Ringo appears only to plug his new film, and George Harrison is on the record for a total of four seconds. By the end of this record, its clear that even though it hasnt been said yet, the Beatles are over. If the Abbey Road finale didnt hint at it, this Christmas Record made it abundantly clear. The camaraderie that abounded in the 1963 record was gone, and it was obvious that an era had come to an end. Four months after the release of this record, Paul released his McCartney album. Included with early copies of the album was a press release stating that he was leaving the Beatles and that the band had no more plans for the future. That year, The Beatles fan club sent out The Beatles Christmas Album, which was a compilation of all the Christmas records from 1963-1969. The album was available until 1972 when the fan club was officially dissolved. Favorite Line: Again, no favorite lines since there are no real standouts. Favorite moment is the end when Ringo laughs over the choir singing The First Noel, which in my mind is the sound of the Beatles story coming to an official close. https://youtube/watch?v=mDIHgjrbN3E
