Todays excerpt is from Phoenix Rising Book Two: Triad. The fifth book available currently in the Phoenix novels. Katrina sank to the chair again, and hunched forward, holding her head in her hands. Her stomach rolled with hunger, her head hurting. If shed been here eighteen hours, it had been close to twenty-four hours since she ate anything and she barely remembered what it had been. She had a vague recollection of some kind of sandwich, but shed spent the day at her terminals. If she understood what verbal communication there had been, the newcomer had been sent again in search of food and apparently clothing. Hed come back with clothing from somewhere, could have been from any of the abandoned, condemned apartments in the building, left in the rush to find something safer or left because the ones who lived here were dead. She raised her head in time to see Omega pull a blue sweater over his head. He had shucked the soiled infirmary pants, apparently quite quickly since he already wore faded jeans. The one who had been with them since she woke turned his head and stared down at her, his hazel eyes hard. She couldnt determine if they were cold in anger, or because he was focused, or concerned, or... Which one are you? He tipped his head, staring at her. Katrina swallowed and pointed at the only one she recognized. I know youre Omega. Then she motioned between the other two. But I dont know which of you is Alpha and which of you is Beta. I-I cant keep thinking of you as Not Omega One and Not Omega Two. I am designation Alpha, the one she had addressed stated. She looked to him, forcing herself to look into his eyes that, although they were the same color of Omegas, held a hardness Omegas didnt. Not a frightening hardness, but something different. Omega and the one she now knew as Beta looked to Alpha. She would be fine as long as Alpha and Beta didnt move, but unless she figured out a way to tell them apart, shed be lost once they did. Neither of them said anything, the only indication they werent statues being the shift of their eyes between them. Alphas head snapped around to look at her again. What year is it on your calendar? 2054. March. Um, if you took me... She stuttered the end of the sentence, then cleared her throat. I think today is the fourth. Wednesday. They looked at each other again. Could you please... She waited until they looked at her. Could you please talk. I mean, I think youre talking to each other, but its disconcerting to have you... She stopped and let out a breath, relieved her heart had finally stopped pounding. Katrina closed her eyes and rested her forehead on her raised knees. She still hurt, every part of her. After sleeping for nearly eighteen hours, how could she be so tired? Who commands this world? She had no idea who spoke, but forced herself to raise her head. Luck for her, none of them had moved so she still knew who was who. Is there a particular answer that will get me killed? she asked. Omegas head ticked just slightly and his eyes shifted to look to Alpha. It was coming clearer. Alpha was just as the name indicated. He was the leader, the one who said yes or no to anything. Omega turned back to her. You continue to fear us. No harm will come to you. Id love to believe that, she mumbled, unfolding again. But considering the fact you dragged me out of my lab into the cold, and how have me holed up in some... Katrina looked around, processing the room. She remembered again, snippets at a time, coming to the Squatter District and the condemned apartment building. Katrina shook off the rest of the explanation and focused again on Alpha and Omega. *I am the Alpha and the Omega.* The Bible quote was completely out of place, but it seemed to fit all the same. There are no Sorracchi here anymore, she finally said. Not to speak of. There was a war. Almost a year ago. Them versus us. Humans. We won. She added a shrug. At least, those of us left won. They all exchanged looks. Youre doing it again. Omega shifted his focus to her. We are unaccustomed to the necessity of using spoken language. Clearly. Her stomach rumbled again. We have a president, named leader in the days following the end of war. His name is Nicholas Tanner.
