Todays manifesto is on the four stages of civic disengagement: - TopicsExpress

Todays manifesto is on the four stages of civic disengagement: hope, rage, disillusion, apathy. What caused this current disruption in the force? Sally and I went to our little 2nd grade neighbors school Christmas (or holiday, or whatever) program. The suffocating space into which we were all crammed had to have been 85 degrees, and clearly the school is bursting at the seams. A look out back offers the worst indictment of all; a sea of portables that stand as monuments to our lack of vision and frankly selfishness. For all the great things about Washington State, our legislative prohibition against building schools to accommodate projected growth is an example of unmitigated stupidity. So we send our children off to our schools, hopeful for their safety first, and then that theyll learn and grow, meet nice friends, etc. Next we encounter the reality of overcrowded schools, and frankly mostly hope to just get OUR kids out the door. We see portable classroom villages and quickly turn our heads away, ignoring classes that are way too large, and teachers that are expected to do way,way too much. Out of sight, out of mind - we ignore it and hope what, that these thing will go forth and heal themselves? Hows that working for us on Wall Street? Of course these things pale in comparison to the real priorities of getting more money into our elections. But hey, these things are all somebody elses problems, right?
