Todays photos illustrate what weve affectionately come to call the Gap Emergence Process. Everyone thinks theyre going to look forward to these numerous descents but weve decided its often times harder to go down than up! Weve also found that after days of walking the trail, carrying 35lbs, when you come busting out of the woods to cross a paved trail, you tend to stagger across, almost as if drunk. You dont realize how much your body compensates for the uneven terrain until you step out into the road....often in a big curve...and attempt to scurry across. There are various markers announcing your arrival to one of the many gaps along the trail. Woody Gap is the first actual paved road you cross between Springer Mountain and Neels Gap. Theres an actual building housing the restrooms (still composting toilets however, but at least enclosed) and theres trash dump facilities. Theres even a really great view! We stopped here long enough to decide if we could make it to Lance Creek...still 4 miles away...knowing that once we left the area, our next actual road crossing would be Neels Gap. Onward (and upward) we went! Scott was kind enough to demonstrate what has become known as the Gap Emergence face, the look you get when you reach a gap, knowing that what goes down must go up! Have a great day everyone! :)
