Todays reading shows us some Old Testament prophecies that are fulfilled in Jesus. Jesus settled in Capernaum, and used it as the home base for His ministry as He travelled through Galilee. This move fulfilled Isaiahs prophecy regarding this region.... Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory. The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness,a light will shine. Isaiah 9:1-2 Isaiahs prophecy stated that the Messiah would be a light to the land of Zebulun and Naphtali, the region of Galilee where Capernaum was located. Zebulun and Naphtali were two of the original 12 tribes of Israel that had been divided (Judah/Israel) and followed the northern tribes that became Israel. If you remember from our readings, the 10 tribes that broke off and became Israel never had a good king, thus they plunged into darkness much sooner than Judah. The next prophecy that is filled in todays reading, is one of my favorite ones. After settling in Capernaum, Jesus begins traveling through Galilee. Upon doing so, He re-enters His childhood home of Nazareth. This Scripture tells us that while He was in Nazareth, He went to the Synagogue to teach.... When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written.... “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come...” (Isaiah 61:1-2).... He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!” Luke 4:16-30 In Isaiahs prophecy, he was picturing the deliverance of Israel from exile in Babylon as a Year of Jubilee (the year according to Levitical law when all debt must be erased, all slaves are freed, and property is returned to the original owners- Leviticus 25) But the release from the Babylonian exile had not brought the expected fulfillment; they were still an oppressed people. So Isaiah was referring to a future messianic age. By Jesus boldly announcing, The Scripture youve just heard has ben fulfilled this very day!, Jesus was proclaiming Himself as the one who would bring this Good News to pass, but He would do so in a way that the people, were not able to grasp. Although Jesus had fulfilled the first part of the prophecy in that time, if He had continued reading on in the passage in Isaiah he would have finished the verse with..... and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies. Isaiah 61:2 This verse signifies that there is a gap of time between the fulfillment of the first portion of Isaiahs prophecy and the fulfillment of the latter portion. This later part will be filled in Jesus Second Coming, which will occur after the Great Tribulation (a seven year period of time that will end the world as we know it). youtube/watch?v=Bh9w6TgUkaU
