Todays strike by Makerere University students; i think is quite logical. The university has increased Graduation fees from 90,000 to 220,000. I do not want to condone violence as a means of resolving problems but hey, its constitutional. I have been thinking: What is the basis for the university to increase the fee by over 100%? What are those costs the University meets during graduation that necessitate an increase? 1. Availing a transcript to a student is the universitys responsibility and so shouldnt be counted. This is because any institution of learning should be able to pass out its students through awarding them certificates of completion. Lets be honest here, these guys have been paying tuition for 3 - 5yrs. Shouldnt some savings be made to cater for the transcripts really? In this elecronic era, reduce costs by having certified transcripts online. 2. Erecting of tents, Public address system and inviting the Chancellor plus general event management cant be an issue. 3. Academic gowns are hired or procured by the students based on their various disciplines of study from Wandegeya and neighboring locations. So this also doesnt count. 4. Most of these students come from very poor backgrounds and the university should surely be understanding enough While the students are striking over an increase of fees from 90k to 220k, am battling with my brain wondering why even the 90k?. Maybe am wrong. Before increasing to 220k, let the students first understand why they are actually paying even the 90k as well..just a simple accountability. In other news - JPAM goes on a 2 months leave.. The man has not had leave for the last 9 yrs. ...mmmmm....haya....am watching....
