Todays transfers: Grimes makes Swansea City move England Under-20 international joins from Exeter after impressing in U21 PL Cup last season Matt Grimes, 19, made 62 first team appearances for Exeter from August 2013 Swansea City have signed England Under-20 midfielder Matt Grimes from Exeter City for an undisclosed fee, the club have announced. Grimes, who has agreed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Welsh club, will first be eligible to feature against West Ham United in the Barclays Premier League on 10 January. The 19-year-old became a regular for League Two club Exeter last season after helping their Under-21s beat Crystal Palace, Southampton and Blackburn Rovers on the way to the quarter-finals of the Under-21 Premier League Cup. After making his senior debut for the Grecians last season, he went on to make 62 appearances, scoring five goals, and won the club’s Player of the Year award at the end of the 2013/14 campaign. Grimes, who earned his first call-up the England U20s this season, is Swanseas second January signing, after the loan of Portugal striker Nelson Oliveira from Benfica, and he is keen to settle in at the club. I’ve watched a lot of Swansea, especially over the last month or so, and I’m a big fan of Ki [Sung-yueng], he told swanseacity.net. We played against Swansea in pre-season and he was class. “But they’ve got good players all over the pitch and I love their style. The manager instils total football into the players and the club seems really grounded, probably because they’ve come from the bottom in such a short space of time.
