Todays twist on Halloween inspired critters is The Honduran White Bat, Ectophylla alba. A teeny, weeny snow white tenting bat that only grows to about 4.5 cm / 2 long. Found in Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and in parts of Panama, White Bats will make tents for themselves to roost under from a large leaf of a Heliconia by cutting into the side veins of the leaf which causes the leaf to fold over like a tent, providing them with shelter from the elements and predators. An entire colony of white bats may roost under several individual leaf tents in groups of up to 6 individuals, consisting of a single male and his harem of females. The Honduran White Bat is classified as Near Threatened and is one of only two known species of White Bat, the other is the Northern Ghost Bat, Diclidurus albus.
