Today—10 October—in Hawaiian History [1899]:The Hawaiian Gazette ran the headline THE AUTOMOBILE: Makes Its Appearance in Honolulu E. D. Tenney was seen driving Hawaiis first car on King Street in Honolulu after it arrived by steamer two days earlier. The car was purchased and owned by the wealthy Maui businessman and politician Henry Perrine Baldwin—H. P. Bladwin was a co-founder of Alexander and Baldwin Co. Tenney reached a top speed of 14 mph as he cruised Punahou Street. Tenney was a director of the recently founded Hawaiian Automobile Company. The newspaper assured its readers that the general fear of the car exploding would not come to pass. The paper also explained that there were several methods of powering automobiles and the preference as to method depended on location: France-gasoline, England-steam, and America-electricity.
