Today—12 May—in Hawaiian History [1893]: The Hawaiian-language newspaper Ka Leo o Ka Lahui publishes the lyrics to a mele titled He Lei No Ka Poe Aloha Aina by Eleanor Kekoaohiwaikalani Wright Prendergast. The song, later to be more familiarly know as Mele Ai Pohaku and Kaulana Na Pua was written in protest of the firing of the Royal Hawaiian Band for their refusal to sign an oath of allegiance to the government that had overthrown Queen Liliʻuokalani. For more on the song see the articles Aloha Aina: New Perspectives on ʻKaulana Na Puaʻ by Amy Kuʻuleialoha Stillman in v33 (1999) of the Hawaiian Journal of History and Kaulana Na Pua: A Voice for Sovereignty by Elanor C. Nordyke and Martha H. Noyes in v27 (1993) of the same journal. evols.library.manoa.hawaii.edu/handle/10524/167 evols.library.manoa.hawaii.edu/handle/10524/172
