Today’s Thought: In Africa, children can take candy from - TopicsExpress

Today’s Thought: In Africa, children can take candy from strangers… no problem. So, I gave a mini candy bar to a little boy. Three of his friends walk up and I watched him break this little (2 bite) mini chocolate bar into four pieces. I watched in amazement. In America, often times, I’ve heard parents pressuring their children to share. I reflected on a time when I stuffed a piece of candy in my mouth before I had to share it… (confessions of an ex-glutton). Then I thought of how if I had that size candy, I probably wouldn’t mind sharing with one person, but if more than one came… I’d apologize for not having enough. Sometimes, I get asked,” What is the difference between being in America and being in Africa?” It is a broad question with a myriad of answers. But culturally speaking, one society prides itself on being individualistic and independent while the other reflects the great need for communal interdependence. Perhaps, this story reflects culture, but it also shines light on that introspective truth. A truth that I must properly respond to: Share. Give. Give and God will replenish, so that you can give even more. Ask Him in what ways are you to give. Selfishness is darkness; there is no light is selfishness. Jesus is light and the epitome of selflessness. Plead with the Lord to be shaped more and more into the image of Christ.
