Today’s Tip: This time of year when running repeatedly in smaller indoor pens you may find that your barrel horses get “short” and anticipating the turns, creating a greater tendency to tip barrels. When winter weather limits breezing or riding in wide open spaces, keep in mind that simply limiting the number of small circles and instead including more long, straight lines can be highly beneficial for freeing a horse up and encouraging them to extend. Even if you have only a small space to ride in, be intentional about asking for a lengthened stride. Doing so in your day to day riding will tend to transfer over to your runs and can make over-anticipation in the turns less likely. Also remember our horses should connect and respond more so to their rider, than their environment – but it’s up to US to teach them! For more tips visit BarrelRacingTips.
