Today’s readings had some great passages in it but I would like to specifically focus on the Psalm 66 portion of our reading. As a worship leader and musician, I have always been drawn to the Psalms and the tones in which they were written. They have inspired many of my own songs over the years as well. The author of this Psalm is unknown, however, many believe it to be David because of the style in how it is written. But this Psalm gives us a great example of how to approach God is both worship and prayer. It starts out with a general call to praise God for his sovereignty and his “awesomeness”. [Psalm 66:1-4] It’s have found that it always helps me in my prayer walk to start off by praising God for simply who He is and the truths I know about Him. It seems to put me in a better posture for the rest my prayer. The next section that the Psalm goes into remembering what God has done. [“Come and see what our God has done, what awesome miracles he performs… vs.5-7] It is incredible important for us, as believers, to remember what God has done in our lives. A good idea is to make it a habit of literally writing down all the times and ways that God has shown himself faithful. (Which is much more than we would think) That way, when we are going through storms and struggles, we can look back and know that God cares about us, loves us and will see us through the storm. And finally, the last section closes with a personal testimony of God faithfulness in the authors life and how he still answers prayers. [“But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer. Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw his unfailing love for me.” vs.19-20] What an encouragement to see that God will still answer prayers and still be just as faithful today as He was back then. We serve a mighty God who is unchanging. And in our worship and prayer time, be honest with Him…he can handle it. Tell Him the things that your rejoicing in but also the things you are struggling with. Tell him your cares, He wants to take them from us (1 Peter 5:7) And remember that prayer is a conversation and that means that we can’t do all the talking…Simply put, if we are talking, we aren’t listening. So allow time to pause and just listen for how God responds. What a privilege we have that we can boldly go before the Lord whenever we want and spend time in His presence! Be blessed today.
