Today’s shooting of an unarmed Canadian soldier standing guard over a memorial to those who served our country is unspeakably tragic. Tonight my thoughts are with Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and his family, especially his six-year-old son. Canadians are strong. We will not back down in the face of violence, we will not live in fear and we will not allow this incident to change who we are and the values we hold dear. As we mourn the loss of a fellow Canadian brutally murdered in the prime of life, let’s also remember the first responders in Ottawa and all over our country who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe. They deserve our unending respect and thanks for the courage and honour with which they do their jobs. Tonight I remember Cpl. Nathan Cirillo. Although I am deeply saddened, today and always I am proud to be Canadian.
