Toller Cranston, born in Hamilton,Ontario, Canada, widely acclaimed as the most influential figure skater of this century, was found dead at his home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico today, at the age of 65. A lifetime of remarkable achievements make this artist extraordinary, and he was a modern day Renaissance man: three-time world free-skating champion; Canadian Athlete of the Year, Olympic medallist, member of the Order of Canada, internationally-known painter, illustrator, author, designer, choreographer, skating coach, commentator and star of award-winning television specials and films. Cranston is credited by many with bringing a new level of artistry to mens figure skating. The hours and hours of skating I watched as a result of being drawn in to the sport, in great part, because of my fascination with Toller Cranston! Cranston retired from skating, and relocated to Mexico where his main artistic outlet was painting that often incorporated themes related to skating. He also apparently had my love of strawberries as he also included them a lot in his paintings (including Strawberry Ice, and Strawberry Queen), and CBC Skating Special, Strawberry Ice, in 1982 that also included Peggy Fleming, Sandra and Val Bezic, Allen Schramm, and Sarah Kawahara. Condolences to Cranstons family, friends, and admirers. A true Canadian trailblazer, and an incredible artist sure to be missed by so very many, Sherrey XOXO
