Tom Adams was quick to leave the foundry to battle a fire started at the dock on Randolph Street in Detroit. Sparked by a freighter, the blaze took out 300 homes and businesses in 1848. Adams later created his own shipping company- with a freighter named in his honor built at Bay City in 1888. The steamer Adams was renamed Langham in 1902. It Mixteriously burst into flames off the Keweenaw Peninsula in 1910, sinking on this date in 100 feet of water.
