Tom Steyer, who is the money behind the efforts to kill the Keystone XL pipeline, is an investor in a competing pipeline. Steyer is also trying to kill the domestic coal industry, while his hedge fund has become the pre-eminent financier of coal transactions in Asia and Australia. The rule, which is basically never broken, is that if there is a left-wing billionaire funding anti-capitalist political activity, and particularly green political activity, there is always a cynical and hypocritical hidden agenda which involves using the political process to benefit what would otherwise be second-rate investments under free market conditions.
