Tomorrow is World Prematurity Day . . . Thanks to decades of research and as well as my daughters incredible force of nature, my Becky burst into the world with a tiny kitten cry at 2 lbs 15.5 oz on 9/7/03 and showed us that that the tiny are mighty indeed. Today Becky is 10 years old and just came back from a birthday party where they played laser tag and she really kicked butt. Not bad for a kid that came home on medical equipment, a set of medications and a whole team of specialists and more, huh? :) The attached picture shows our wonderful Rabbi Perlin of Temple Bnai Shalom and Gregg surrounding me as I hold Becky just after we did a special naming ceremony in the NICU when our little girl was 1 week old. I believe this was truly life-affirming as Rabbi Perlin put it at the time. Becky had some dark days ahead of her after this photo was taken so we were grateful that a naming ceremony had quickly been done at our Rabbis urging. Becky came through it all and came home much to our joy and our relief. At home we struggled to work around wires and medical professionals and tried to figure out how to be parents. Slowly but surely we made our way thanks to my family and Greggs family. We had lots of people surrounding us and supporting us, especially the medical professionals and the therapeutic professionals. Prematurity will always be a part of Beckys history and the residual challenges a part of her life but she continues to amaze us every single day with her brilliance, her wit, her charm and her incredible kindness toward animals. We love you, Becky, and we love that you have gone from a tiny kitten cry to a roaring lion of a laser tag player. :) The tiny are indeed mighty! ROAR!!!!!
