“Tongue Twisting” On Broh’s Confirmation ...House of Representatives Divided The House of Representatives is presently divided over the confirmation of former Monrovia acting City Mayor, Mary Broh. Following the reading of the Senate’s concurrence letter to declare Madam Broh and Kpan as non-government materials in the Ellen’s administration, heated argument sparked out in the House’s chamber with some lawmakers demanding that the Senate letter be discussed in open session, while others differed and called for ‘secret’ or executive session. Representative Matenokay Tingban argued that the Senate’s communication supporting the decision of the House for Madam Broh and Kpaan to be declared “non-governmental material” needs to be debated openly for Liberians to be informed about the Legislature non-compliance on the issue. According to him, hundreds of Liberians are curious to listen to the decision of the 53rd National Legislature on the issue of Broh’s confirmation. For his part, Representative Solomon George said: “we should not compromise the interest of our people in the name of reconciliation,” he demanded. According to him, several Liberians are qualified to serve in the capacity as Mayor of the City of Monrovia. He argued that Mayor Broh is not indispensible, adding that anyone can function effectively as mayor when he/she is adequately supported by the Unity Party (UP) led government. After few minutes of argument, Deputy House Speaker Hans Barshue called for an Executive session. Following an hour long close door deliberation on Broh’s confirmation, members of the Lower House agreed that the discussion be extended to August 1, 2013 after the 166th July 26 Independence Day celebration in Tubmanburg, Bomi County. Meanwhile, lawmakers appealing for the confirmation of Madam Broh are: Representatives Saah Joseph, Mary Karwor, Zoe Pennue, Edwin Snowne, Tokpah Mulbah, George Mulbah, among others. It can be recalled that Representative George Mulbah made the motion for the former Monrovia City Mayor and then Montserrado Superintendent to be declared “non-governmental materials”, but has now twisted his tongue, calling for her confirmation. Several senior Unity Party partisans earlier opposed the reappointment of Madam Mary Broh. Recently, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf re-nominated the acting former Mayor of Monrovia City. But several Liberians including Representatives Acarous Moses Gray, Solomon George, R. Matenokay Tingban, Clarence Massaquoi, among others were opposing the reappointment of Madam Broh and her subsequent confirmation by the Liberian Senate. With this signal emanating from the Lower House, it appears that change of minds is gradually permeating the thoughts of members of the House of Representatives, calling for Broh’s confirmation. According to law, members of the House of Representatives have no fish to fry in the confirmation of Madam Broh. The issue of Broh’s confirmation solely rests with the Liberian Senate. But political inter-play from the Lower House has a great influence on her confirmation.
