Tonight I decided to watch my copy of John Carter. Coincidentally, today is exactly two years since the film was released (did not know that until afterward). It was the first live action effort by Andrew Stanton of Finding Nemo. This movie was accused of deriving elements from space and sci-fi adventure flicks that came before it, but the critics leveling these accusations were unknowingly brazenly confessing their ignorance of the source material. You see, Edgar Rice Burroughs published the book A Princess of Mars almost a century ago, and his series of John Carter books inspired scientists and some of our most imaginative novelists and filmmakers, including Michael Crichton, James Cameron and, indirectly, George Lucas. John Carter isnt a great film, and it is a bit long-winded, yet it has great moments, including the fun payoff. Its a shame that a perfect storm of terrible marketing and ignorance meant audiences didnt know what to make of the movie when it released. I think it deserves the sequels Disney had originally planned to do.
