Tonight I had the wonderful experience of meeting a new friend. - TopicsExpress

Tonight I had the wonderful experience of meeting a new friend. Just after the sun had set, I was waiting on the pier for all the color to show itself in the sky. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw an elderly lady with a cane walking across the parking lot toward the pier. I kept my eye on her because the pavement is uneven and I was concerned about her making it safely. Beyond that, she also piqued my interest because she had a determined look in her eye. It was as if she was compelled to make it out to the pier to experience all the changing colors that were unfolding before us. I made my way slowly over to her. After all, I was a stranger and I didn’t want to frighten her away, nor did I want to invade this private moment she seemed to be having. I remarked quietly about how particularly glorious the sky was this evening. She agreed and then quickly engaged in conversation with me. She told me she was from out of town but was here visiting a friend. We talked about the sunsets and I explained about what compels me to head out to the river almost every night of the week. I named some of the different clouds and showed her some of the shots I had taken on my camera. We talked about Antioch and the changes this city has gone through and continues to go through. We talked about El Campanil Theatre and all it has to offer to this community. She was very interested in what I had to say and she asked great questions. She asked me if I would be at the pier next Saturday. I told her that most likely I would be. She took my hand and asked if she could possibly have my phone number because she wanted to keep in touch and definitely spend more time together. She said there was “something” about me that she found very interesting. I found her to be very charming and she had an elegant manner about her. I’ll bet she’s had an interesting life and has many stories she still wants to share. We exchanged phone numbers and she promised that she would call. Each night that we head out to the shipyard I always say to myself, “I wonder what we’ll find out there tonight?” Normally, it’s a colorful sunset, boaters, fishermen and birds. I had no idea that tonight my greatest find would be a new friend. I’m looking forward to my next conversation with Lee. I have a feeling we’ll have much to talk about.
