The constitution of the United States of America is a document that guarantees our form of government will be decided by the people or by people that are elected by the people. It has nothing to do with the form of government we set up in the system. Democracy and republic mean just about the same thing--rule by the people. The demo in democracy is from the Greek ‘demos’, which means The People. The public in republic is the Latin word for The People. A democracy can be direct, with every qualified citizen voting on every issue, or it can be representative, as most modern democracies are, where people elect representatives, by district or state, to represent them in a legislative body (like a parliament). Republic simply means the country is not a dictatorship, an absolute monarchy, or something like it; A Republic means essentially the same as a democracy. Socialism and Communism are forms of government where the government decides who will own all the ‘means of production’ i.e. mines, factories, farms, etc. The government plans the economy, it decides what factories will be built, what they will manufacture, how many what they will cost, etc. These forms of government (socialism and communism) in our history, like capitalism, succeed when the people run the government. It has only happened for very brief times in the world history we know today. The success or failure has depended largely on who is running the system and what their priorities are. This is why capitalism isnt doing so great around the world of 2014 as well. Many countries are finding socialism helps spread the wealth of our resources better to the people in the world today, where the government (voted on by the people), passes laws to keep greedy capitalists from making the rich richer on the backs of the poor. It was a republican that said we need a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. (Abraham Lincoln).
