Tonight I tried to explain the concept of sentient beings to my son. It did not go as well as it might. I told him that almost all animals rely on instinct rather than learned behaviour that embraces responsibilities and consequences. It all started when we began discussing the fact that shark can smell blood a good distance away and will home in for a kill (rare steak was being ingested at the time). I told him that while fish are not parents in the traditional sense they would try to protect the weakest fish in the shoal by letting them swim in the middle. So they cant learn then? Thats just rubbish.....they need punching, that would teach them!
