Tonight I will lift a toast to my Grandfather, James F. OBrien - TopicsExpress

Tonight I will lift a toast to my Grandfather, James F. OBrien Sr., who on this day in 1918 (seven weeks after the Armistice was signed) was shot in the ass by a Boshevik sharpshooter in the Battle of Kodysh, 50 miles in country from Archangel RU. He survived and resisted a British surgeons offer to amputate his leg (a mere two years after the Easter Rebellion no less). After a long convalescence, he was finally declared a disabled veteran by the War Department in 1927 and because of his shortened leg, received two pair of hand-cobbled shoes for the rest of his life as his military pension. The silver lining is that he met my Grandmother, a nurse, in the Army hospital in Chicago. And the rest, as they say is (more) history. Happy New Year to All.
