Tonight i re visited GORATH which i have seen before but vaguely remembered it so i viewed it in mind to review. GORATH is notable by most Godzilla fans as a science fiction film done by Producer Tomoyuki Tanaka, Director Ishiro Honda and Special Effects Eiji Tsuburaya and the (only) appearance by walrus kaiju MAGUMA. Save for the re-use of the suit in a Ultra Q episode In a short summary, A Japanese spaceship fatally encountering a run-away planet smaller than Earth, but much greater in mass, is heading toward our planet. It is now up to Earth scientists to build rocket boosters at the South Pole in order to move the Earth out of its orbit In sort its one of the more far fetched plots of the SCI-FY films of Toho and normally i dont ever take these films serious but there is its ridiculous moments in logic. Even after i look past that its not a bad entry but i found myself bored at many parts which suffered from weak character development, somewhat slow at times pacing and then even rushed plot points. The highlights for me were the Special Effects, particularly the models and climax, Eiji had a larger budget here then he did with King Kong vs Godzilla so the effects are among its finest! Maguma, though an extended cameo, is sort of a treat for kaiju fans. He was added last minute on instance from Tanaka to cash in the popularity of the Giant Monster films. Though some may feel Maguma could have used a larger role, Perhaps its best his role given would leave left to be desired. Not much he could do overall anyway but still a fun kaiju. GORATH can be considered an ensemble film from its popular actors of the time we know so well from the Godzilla films. Akira Kubo (Monster Zero,Son of Godzilla) has a large supporting role along with Ken Uhera (Mothra, Atragon) as a Scientist, Akhito Hirata (Gojira,Godzilla vs the Sea Monster, Terror of MechaGodzilla) as a Space Captain, Kumi Mizuno (Monster Zero,Godzilla vs the Sea Monster) as Kubos love interest, Takashi Shimura (Gojira, Godzilla Raids Again) as Sonoda and Jun Tazaki (General from King Kong vs Godzilla) as the doomed JX-1 Space Captian which may be the most standout performance of the film with a teary eyed statement. The cast which includes Ryo Ikebe and Yumi Shirakawa in the lead, does very well despite there underdeveloped characters but i always praise Toho for having great actors in their department. Overall, Its a decent SCI-FY toho film but it failed to capture my attention and excitement in its majority but several people love it and you may to! Finding this film is difficult and expensive, so if you want to complete youre viewing of Toho Science Fiction, I recommend you go to Dailymotion to view the whole film (which is split in 4 parts) Enjoy! **1/2
