Tonight is the UW Stout Game Launch event, showcasing a variety of games designed by students in the Video Game Design & Development program. While most of the entries are video games, my GDD101 students worked hard on five boardgames. There is a lot of variety and some really clever concepts. I am really proud of the work my students have done, which includes: - FEWL (Fire, Earth, Water, Lightning). A light RTS styled wargame pitting different elements against each other for domination of the land. Players gather resources, upgrade their buildings and units, and seek to be the last element standing when the proverbial dust settles. - Berry Divided. An asymmetric strategy game where the Berry Empire tries to protect King Strawberry from the relentless assault of hungry omnivores. However, the animals have stolen the berries precious Golden Waffle Iron - and they need to recover it before their King is defeated! - Goliath: Battle of MonstroCity. An overlord tactics game where a group of literary stereotypes (zombies, etc) gear up with special abilities and equipment, then gang up on a huge player controlled monster, reminding me a bit of the soon-to-be-released video game Evolve. - Aerial Warfare. A steampunk game featuring planes, helicopters and dirigibles, each with their own unique maneuver system and custom weapon targeting template. Players take to the skies, seeking out resources to upgrade their ships and destroy their opponents. - Museum Madness. Starving artists use Inspiration as a resource to create works of art to fill up the wings of a museum. Larger works may score the most, but they take more time than sculptures or smaller pieces. But watch out, as there are a limited number of open spaces in each wing, and once an artist has run out of Inspiration, the game ends!
