Tonight was interesting. I met a guy, 32 years old, who smuggled into Australia via boat 3 years ago - an illegal immigrant. His wife and 2 kids are back in Afghanistan. He bought our old Toyota Camry, as Kelly has a company car now. When I went to his house, he had about 10 Toyotas parked outside. I asked him what he was doing with all these cars... He says he buys 100s of cars, guts them for their engines and gearboxes, fills up shipping containers, and then exports them to Dubai. He then sells the body of the car for scrap metal. He also has a business where he contracts other boat smugglers as trolley pushers to the supermarkets. There is a perception amongst Australians that all these boat people come over and bludge off taxpayer money while on the dole. When I asked him about that he said in his religion (Islam) it is normal to work from the age of 7-9 years. Most of the boat smugglers he claims have set up businesses in Australia. His export business makes around 80k profit (per shipping container) every 3 months. He owns lots of property overseas too apparently. For a guy that spoke very poor English, he seemed to be doing all right for himself while supporting his family overseas. He said that he gets permanent residence at the end of this year when he can then bring the rest of his family over. I found his story very inspirational. The guy has overcome a lot of obstacles to get to where he is. He said Im welcome to come to his house anytime, and that everyone there is friendly.
