Tonight we are bracing ourselves for a winter storm and a potential snow day. Since my Uncle Harry shared this recipe and his family tradition with me, it looks like well be making great grandma Staces Doughnuts again! Her Pumpkin Pie recipe is in my new cookbook, but these doughnuts coated in cinnamon and sugar are super easy to make and so so good. Be prepared tonight so you can be ready in the morning. You will need a rolling pin, deep fryer, juice glass, and a wedding ring for cutting the center hole (if youd like to make them exactly the way Stace did) plus the following ingredients: 1 3/4 cups flour + extra for rolling 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon + extra for coating 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup sugar + extra for coating 2 tablespoons vegetable oil + 4-6 cups for frying 1/2 cup milk Sift together flour, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, and sugar. Add oil and milk. Mix together by hand until the mixture resembles dough. Dust your counter top and rolling pin with flour, roll out the dough about an inch thick and cut with a juice glass and wedding ring as shown in the photo. While the vegetable oil is heating up, prepare a separate bowl with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon to roll your hot doughnuts in. Place doughnuts in hot grease. When doughnuts are done, they will rise to the top and be golden brown. Coat the doughnuts in cinnamon and sugar mixture. Recipe makes about a dozen doughnuts. Serve warm only on snow days.
