Rodgers has no doubts about Balotelli’s talent but Liverpool will ask the player to commit himself to a contract that would lead to heavy sanctions if he fails to achieve the necessary standards of application and behaviour. These requirements, rather than personal terms, will provide the final hurdle to the deal. Among the clauses that Liverpool propose are structured punishments for being disruptive in training or guilty of bad timekeeping. Mino Raiola, Balotelli’s agent, held further discussions with Liverpool yesterday and a five-year contract has been offered. That development prompted Balotelli to bid farewell to his team-mates at the Milanello training ground and he also informed Sky Italia that it would be his final day as a Milan player.
