Tony Bettenhausen Indianapolis 1958 in the Jones & Maley Epperly Offenhauser. Quin Epperly constructed this gorgeous laydown in 1958 and the construction of the car was supervised by Lou and Sonny Meyer. Quin copied the engine placement, 18 degrees above horizontal and the body style of George Salihs 1957 winning car that Quin also did the bodywork on. The talented and super popular veteran Tony Bettenhausen was chosen to drive the brand new car. Tony qualified the car at 143.919 to put himself on the outside of row three for the start. Although Tony was a perennial favorite to win the 500 this was to be the only time that he led the race. Making it through the massive first lap crash that claimed the life of Pat OConnor Tony ran strong from the start and kept himself in contention for the win. However Tonys hopes to win the race faded with each pit stop as his crew compiled a total of 46 seconds more than that of the winning Belond crew with Jimmy Bryan at the wheel. Tony passed Jim Rathmann in the final laps to claim 4th place. It was to be Quin Epperlys best 500 with George Amick taking 2nd driving Quins Demler #99 and Tony coming home in 4th. Tony Bettenhausen ended up leading a total of 24 laps in the 1958 Indianapolis 500.
