Too important not to share! Thank you, Wendy!!! The Relationship Between Insulin and Sugar: Insulin is a hormone that helps deliver glucose to your cells. As sugar (in the forms of carbs, fruits, dairy, legumes, rice, starch, etc.) enters your bloodstream from the foods you eat, your pancreas creates insulin, which regulates blood sugar by transporting glucose out of your blood and into your cells. When you eat a lot of sugar, your pancreas is forced to go into overdrive, producing high levels of insulin to compensate. If you eat regularly like this, this elevated level of insulin over time can lead to a condition known as insulin resistance. When you become insulin resistant, your cells become less responsive to the presence of insulin, as a result, they need MORE insulin to absorb the glucose in your blood. So, your pancreas pumps out even more insulin, again and again....over and over. Insulin resistance has been linked to development of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimers. These are the top leading causes of death in America today.
