Basic Wilderness Skills Here is a list of the “ Skills” that will be covered in the Basic Class. We believe that these skills will help to keep you safe and found if your stranded for 72 hours of less. The order that they are listed is not necessarily the order that you’ll use them. Fire – Lighters, Matches, Ferro Rods, Magnifying Glass, Fire Lays, One Stick Fire and how to make char cloth Shelter- Hasty Shelters, Debris Shelters Water- How to find, How to Sterilize, Pasteurization, Solar Stills Woods Tools- Fixed Blade Knives, Axe’s, Saw’s, and how to sharpen them. Signaling- Learn different techniques, How to stay found Map & Compass- Pace count, Ranger Beads, Compass Works, Map Reading. Survival Kits- Learn about different survival kits, How to make them. Equipment List These items will be required for the class 1. Fixed Blade Knife- blade length 4-6” 2. Ferocious Rod- Light my fire or similar type 3. Tarp- Needs to be at least 10x10 4. Stainless Steel or Aluminum water bottle with a stain less or metal cup 5. 100’ of parachute-cord and a roll of bank line (bank line can be found at Wal-Mart in the fishing section0 6. Pack to carry items 7. Various sizes of plastic bags (clear zip lock, quart-gallon size) Biggest trash bags you can find 2-3 of them. 8. Compass, needs to be a sighting type ******no button compasses**** 9. If you have them, a hand axe, hand saw or wire saw. 10. 100 % cotton material, so you can make char-cloth. Make sure you wash the material prior to class. 1.You’ll need to bring your normal camping items, including food and your cooking gear. 2. Please be prepared to tote out your trash. 3. Camping will be limited to tents, tarps, or hammocks. 4. You’ll need to bring water with you; only water source is a creek, so you’ll need to purify any water taken from that source. 5. No Campers, or Camper Trailers or Motorhomes allowed.
